Reading (Buehler's Homeroom Only)

Welcome to

5th Grade

Welcome to YCIS and to 5th grade in Mr. Buehler’s class.  I am excited to be starting the year and to get to work with you the parent/guardian to help with your child’s success.  Throughout the next two weeks, your child will be bringing home different papers that will inform you about the procedures and process that go on in 5th grade so make sure to be looking for that information to be coming your way.   Below are some quick tidbits that will help navigate the first few days.

Your child will be filling out their planner every day.  (Unless something comes up at the last minute.)  The planner will let you know what we did each day as well as what assignments that your student did.  If it is an assignment that is to be turned in, the student will highlight it.  If they have completed it, they will put a check next to it and highlight it.

It is the student’s responsibility to be honest with their completion of their planner.  Students will be required to have their parents sign their planner every night.

Students will have regular reading and math homework starting the second week of school.  They will also have other assignments that are not assigned homework but are assignments or projects that they had time to work on but did not simply finish.  This should not take more than 50 minutes for students to complete.  More details will be forthcoming in a YCIS homework policy document.

YCIS Work Day:

Tomorrow, September 9th , YCIS students and staff, George Fox, and a host of parent volunteers will be participating in YCIS work day.  We will be working in the afternoon from 1:00-1:30.  Students should wear clothes that they can move and groove In outside.  Students will NOT be painting but will be helping to clean up our school for the school year.

Snacks and Water:

5th graders will usually have lunch from 11:15-11:45 every day (exceptions are made for assembly schedules.  I know that some students need to have a small snack throughout the day, so they will have some time in the afternoon for that.  Snacks  will be brought from home, and need to be nutritious and nut free due to students with nut allergies in the fifth grade.   In addition, students should also bring a water bottle to use throughout the day.  This room can get quite toasty, and it is important for students to stay hydrated.

This year, we are rotating fifth grade teachers for some core classes.  This is in an effort to give students more specialized instructions and a richer experience in preparing them for junior high.  Your students will have Ms. Shore for math and Ms. MacFarlane for Literacy.  If you have questions about their specific classes, you can always feel free to contact them personally.  If you are not sure who to talk to about an assignment or issue, use me as the beginning point and I will redirect you if necessary.

If you need to get a hold of me about anything you can use phone or email, but email is going to be the best option. ( ) I will usually respond within 24 hours unless something comes up.  If there is something urgent you need, please call the school office and they will convey a message to me.

Likewise, if you want to meet in person, please call or email ahead of time to schedule an appointment as sometimes I will have other meetings or duties.

If you need anything or need any details to help navigate through the beginning school year, please feel free to call or email.

Looking forward to a great year!

Mr. Buehler
